ABOUT US
The SustainShrimp Vietnam (SSVN) Platform is co-funded by ActionAid International and the European Union and implemented by ActionAid International in Vietnam. It aims to promote the transformation of Vietnam’s shrimp industry toward greater transparency, accountability, and sustainable development.
ActionAid International is a global federation working for social justice, placing people and human rights at the heart of all development initiatives. By strengthening community capacity, advancing equality, and enhancing accountability, ActionAid International in Vietnam strives to deliver community-based solutions that foster a harmonious society, which is climate-resilient, disaster-resilient, and built on locally driven action, thereby contributing to a sustainable future for the country.
The SSVN Platform is designed to support shrimp farmers and small and medium-sized enterprises in improving their governance capacity in line with Environmental-Social-Governance (ESG) principles; enhancing traceability; standardizing and digitalizing data; and reinforcing risk management systems across the entire value chain. Through e-learning, self-assessment tools, and improvement tracking mechanisms, the platform enables stakeholders to proactively meet the increasingly rigorous requirements of both domestic and international markets.
The SSVN Platform is not merely a technical solution; it represents a long-term commitment to accompanying shrimp farming communities and enterprises on their green transition journey. The platform contributes to the development of a low-emission, highly resilient shrimp sector and to the gradual affirmation of Vietnam’s sustainable position in the global marketplace.
SSVN PROJECT
The SSVN Project is co-funded by ActionAid International and the European Union and implemented by ActionAid International in Vietnam. The project will be carried out over a period of 42 months, from 1 October 2025 to 31 March 2029, with a total budget of EUR 1.1 million (equivalent to more than VND 30 billion).
The project locations include Ca Mau Province, which is the largest shrimp farming hub in the country and a key focal area of the shrimp industry in the Mekong Delta, and Ha Noi City. The selection of these sites is of strategic significance, as the region is facing increasingly severe impacts from climate change, saline intrusion, and coastal erosion, while simultaneously needing to adapt to ever more stringent production standards and international market requirements.
The project focuses on addressing critical issues affecting the sustainability of the shrimp sector. Key priorities include: enhancing climate change adaptation; improving environmental management in shrimp farming and processing, particularly in waste control and the use of chemicals and antibiotics; supporting shrimp farmers and small and medium-sized enterprises in applying ESG principles, strengthening traceability and improving data transparency; promoting gender equality and the role of smallholder farmers within the value chain; and establishing mechanisms for coordination and policy dialogue among stakeholders.
The overall objective of the project is to contribute to ensuring economic efficiency in tandem with social responsibility and environmental protection, by strengthening coordinated action in the application and monitoring of ESG principles in line with international standards.
Direct beneficiaries include approximately 200 shrimp farming households in Ca Mau Province, 35 small and medium-sized enterprises, 500 farming households and 300 enterprises across the Mekong Delta, as well as managers and policy makers. Indirect beneficiaries comprise around 28,000 small-scale farming households, 1,000 enterprises in the sector, and a wide range of domestic and international consumers. Through a comprehensive, multi-stakeholder approach, the SSVN Project aims to build a highly resilient, low-emission, transparent, and responsible Vietnamese shrimp sector, thereby reinforcing its sustainable position within the global supply chain.
PURPOSE OF THE SSVN PLATFORM
The SSVN Platform is developed within the framework of the SSVN Project, co-funded by ActionAid International and the European Union and implemented by ActionAid International in Vietnam. The platform aims to drive the transformation of the shrimp sector toward greater transparency, accountability, and alignment with ESG principles through the application of digital technology and the strengthening of capacities among value chain actors.
The SSVN Platform supports shrimp farming households and small and medium-sized enterprises in enhancing sustainable practices through an integrated system of e-learning, self-assessment tools, and improvement planning. At the same time, the platform standardizes record-keeping, production data management, and digitalization, strengthens traceability, meets the increasingly stringent requirements of the market, and reduces operational risks.
In addition, the SSVN Platform serves as a connected information space linking shrimp farming communities, enterprises, and regulatory bodies, providing access to knowledge, timely policy updates, and market information. The platform promotes the guiding principle of “doing the right thing, being transparent, continuously improving,” ensuring that ESG compliance is implemented in a substantive manner, thereby laying the foundation for enhanced competitiveness and strengthened market confidence.
Following the completion of the project, the platform will continue to be maintained and further developed by ActionAid as a long-term support tool for the shrimp sector. Through its integration into livelihood development and climate change adaptation programmes, the expansion of partnerships with relevant stakeholders, and the regular updating of its content, the SSVN Platform is envisioned to become a digital infrastructure for sustainable governance. In the long term, the platform will contribute to the formation of an ESG community of practice, promote a low-emission and highly adaptive shrimp sector, and affirm Vietnam’s strong and sustainable position in the global supply chain.
